WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I AM MISSING TEETH?
An accidental impact or blow to the mouth could leave anyone with a few missing teeth. Missing teeth can affect the way you pronounce your words, how you bite and chew your food, and your smile. But, in this day and age of medical and dental advancements no one needs to have missing teeth. Dental bridges are the perfect prosthetic to restore your smile and have you talking and eating normally. A bridge can also prevent other teeth from getting dislodged due to the gap.
WHAT ARE DENTAL BRIDGES?
Knowledgeable and experienced dentists in Miami.
Dental bridges are prosthetic teeth that replace one or more missing teeth. The bridge consists of artificial teeth that are set on a gum colored base. The teeth are made using gold, metal alloys or porcelain. The false tooth/teeth can also be made with a combination of porcelain and metal. The false tooth is called a pontic and it is flanked on either side with crowns that fit over your natural teeth that anchor the bridge in place. The teeth that the crowns fit over are called abutment teeth.
WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR A BRIDGE?
You are a good candidate for a bridge if you have lost one or more teeth but have healthy teeth on either side of the gap. If you have missing teeth, the dentists at Amaya Dental will be able to tell you if a bridge is a good option for you after giving you an oral assessment.
HOW LONG DO BRIDGES LAST?
Dental bridges can last up to fifteen years with the right care and cleaning. Follow your dentist’s instructions carefully to prevent any damage to the bridge.
The bridge might take a little getting used to at first but over time it will start to feel completely natural.
WHAT IS THE PROCEDURE LIKE?
If you are a good candidate for a dental bridge you will undergo the following procedures over the course of a few appointments.
- The abutment teeth will first need to be prepared so that the crowns fit over them comfortably. Preparation of these teeth involves removing some of the enamel from the surface. Removing the enamel makes room for the crown to be placed over the tooth.
- Measurements and impressions will then be taken of the gap and the abutment teeth so that the bridge can be custom made. The color of your other teeth is also noted so that the crowns and pontic match them and look natural. These details are then sent to an external lab where the bridge is prepared.
- A temporary bridge is placed in your jaw to protect the abutment teeth and fill the gap.
- When the final bridge is ready the temporary one is removed and the new one is put in place. Any required adjustments are made at this point and then the bridge is cemented firmly to the abutment teeth.
