Trusted, caring professionals, dedicated to enhancing your quality of life.

There are several reasons why we could lose our teeth. Age, illness, poor dental hygiene, injuries and so on could all lead to loss of teeth. More than just affecting our smile, tooth loss also impairs our ability to bite and chew our food and form words clearly when we speak.

When a set of teeth is replaced on one or both jaws the replacement set is called a denture. Replacing lost teeth with prosthetic teeth has come a long way in the last few decades. Newer more durable materials that look more natural are used and the methods of fixing them to the gums have also improved.

At Amaya Dental we prepare and fix dentures for patients that require them. Our services include complete dentures and removable, partial dentures. Below is a more detailed explanation of how the procedure works and what you need to know before you get dentures.

Partial dentures are used when a few teeth have to be replaced but the rest of your teeth are in a healthy condition. In partial dentures the prosthetic teeth are attached to an acrylic base that is the color of gum tissue. The base can then be attached to that area of the jaw where the teeth are missing. A metal framework attaches the partial denture to the healthy teeth to hold it in place. Partial dentures are important not only from a cosmetic perspective, but they also prevent the early displacement of other teeth and aid in chewing of food.

When all the teeth of one or both jaws need to be replaced, dentists prepare complete dentures for the patient.

Complete dentures can be conventional or immediate. Conventional dentures are made in a separate lab and take longer to be ready. Immediate dentures are made in the dentist’s office and are ready in a day or two.

Conventional dentures fit better and last for a longer time while immediate dentures need to be re-aligned several times and replaced sooner. The main advantage of immediate dentures is that you don’t have to wait too long for them. When you come to Amaya Dental for a consultation, one of our dentists will give you an assessment and determine if you are a good candidate for complete conventional dentures. Sometimes a few teeth might have to be extracted to make room for the new set.

If teeth need to be extracted then an eight to twelve week period is required for the gums to heal completely. After the gums have healed, measurements and impressions will be taken of your jaws so that the complete conventional dentures can be custom made to fit you perfectly.

During the healing process you can be fitted with a set of immediate dentures which will allow you to eat and speak much better. If there has been any bone loss or shrinkage of the gums during the healing process the dentist will make the required adjustments before the complete dentures are fitted.

The denture development process takes a few weeks and several appointments. Your dentist will determine the best option in your case. Once you are ready the process will continue as follows:

  • Impressions of your jaw will be taken to create models.
  • A wax model of the denture will be prepared to check the fit and register the bite before the final piece is made.
  • All required adjustments will be made to the wax model to ensure that the shape, size and fit are perfect for you.
  • Based on the wax model the final set of dentures will be prepared.
  • When your dentures are ready you will be called in to have them fit. Some minor tweaking might be required at this point, which our skilled dentists will take care of.

New dentures may take some time until your mouth adjusts, and some minor discomfort is completely normal. Eating will take a little practice; it is recommended to start with soft foods in small pieces, and to chew slowly using both sides of your mouth. Soon you will be able to continue with your regular diet. It is advisable to avoid extremely hot, hard, or sticky foods when wearing dentures. It is important to follow your dentist recommendation about how to wear your dentures.

Our team of professionals at Amaya Dental will give you a set of instructions on how to care for your dentures. Be sure to follow these instructions carefully to ensure that your dentures last longer and don’t get damaged. Do not hesitate to contact us if you experience any pain or discomfort because of the dentures or if they get chipped or broken.
